(Dear Marius) The Fire in a Hero's Heart (a poem, a dedication)

Dear Marius
The Fire in a Hero's Heart
Written May 3rd, 2011
Hungry fire, burning bright
Tongues of flame reaching up into the night
Devouring all it can touch
Pictures, toys, keepsakes and such
Fringes turn black and curl
In the air ashes swirl
Ravenous destruction with spiteful teeth
Air so hot you can’t breathe.

Hungry fire, burning bright
Your greed was costly that night
The possessions you claimed, we can replace
But not the life you stole, the heart, the face
Do you know what you did, the pain you made?
How many smiles you cut with your treacherous blade?
Filled his lungs with poison smoke
Forced him to his knees, let him choke.

Courageous hero, burning bright
Staring death in the face that night
You didn’t stop to think
Didn’t even take a moment to blink
Dragging someone else from the hands of death
Offering in their place your final breath
Dying as you always chose to live
Never taking, yet constantly trying to give.

 ---
I have thought it to be ironic Mike, that your life was always so full of fire; your passions, your love, your smile; and it was fire that took you away. It must have been quite the battle in there that night, fire fighting against fire. You lived and died as a hero, my dear Marius. And that's how you will always be remembered. I miss you <3
