Late Night Muse (a poem)

Late Night Muse
Written September 11th, 2011
I watch them
I see them all
Lonely, heartbroken, and defeated
It’s in their posture
As they walk down the hall

I’ve been there
Felt it all
I’ve been in that fall

They ask me
How do I do it?
How do I smile,
How do I keep going?
They say
It isn’t worth it
Not at all
It just ends up in tears
They always fall

I smile because I’m alive
I keep going
‘Cuz I know I gotta strive
I have a brain to reason
I have a heart to feel
And I have a body to act
Sometimes I reason wrong
Sometimes my heart is broke
Sometimes my actions haunt me
But life is short and sweet
Like all the other good things
It goes by too fast
I don’t have time to build a house
In the past.

I fall down all the time
I get up and brush off
And do my best
To lift others up
Out of that suffocating dust

You can sulk
You can cry
The sun’s still gonna rise
The clock’s still gonna tick
With or without you
You can be miserable
Right up to your demise
I choose to smile through the tears
To grow taller
And become wise
Call me a rebel
Because I make cities out of rubble

Love arrives
Love leaves
We cry because we lost something precious
If it was truly precious
Why do you focus on the leave
Instead of trying to find
Another arrive?

Life is here,
Then it’s gone
It’s a crazy ride
Of good and bad
Happy and sad
Are you gonna saddle up?
Or let it drag you in the dust
And drop you in the grave?

I have a brain to reason
I have a heart to feel
And I have a body to act
I mess up
Because I’m human
I choose to smile through the tears
To grow taller
And become wise
Like all the other good things
Life goes by too fast
And I don’t have time to build a house
In the past.

Don't be afraid to leave comments! :) Sorry for my absence on my blog... I've been focusing on my novel and when I do that my poetry tends to take a break.
This style is a little different from my usual poem, its more to the point and uses blunter language instead of sounding pretty and eloquent. I think it works for the point I'm trying to get across though :)
