Forget You (a poem)

Forget You
Written April 12th, 2011
I hear your name
And it rings sourly in my ears
I tense up and stare at the ground
I’ll never look at you the same
The veil has been lifted from my eyes
And now I know what is true
I pity the next fool to fall for you

Ladies, look before you leap
He’s the prettiest damn thing
Easy on the eyes and smooth on the talk
He’ll make you want to sing
But he’s wearing the devil’s mask
He made me walk the fool’s walk
Now I’m frozen; no love left
And he still has my favorite book

I see your picture
And my eyes burn bitterly
I clench my fists and grit my teeth
Your memory has the worst texture
The veil has been lifted from my eyes
And now I know what is true
I pity the next fool to fall for you

Ladies, look before you leap
He’s the prettiest damn thing
Easy on the eyes and smooth on the talk
He’ll make you want to sing
But he’s wearing the devil’s mask
He made me walk the fool’s walk
Now I’m frozen; no love left
And he still has my favorite book

I recall the promises you made
And I am suddenly angry at the world
My eyes darken and I turn up my music
All I want is for your memory to fade
The veil has been lifted from my eyes
And now I know what is true
I pity the next fool to fall for you

Ladies, look before you leap
He’s the prettiest damn thing
Easy on the eyes and smooth on the talk
He’ll make you want to sing
But he’s wearing the devil’s mask
He made me walk the fool’s walk
Now I’m frozen; no love left
And he still has my favorite book

Yes, there used to be a day
Where I thought it was impossible
Not to love you
You spat it all back in my face
You betrayed me
Chewed my heart down to a stub
I trusted you,
But I guess now I know better
Cuz you made a fool out of me
And ladies, look before you leap
Cuz he’ll make a fool out of you too

Thanks for the false memories
For the quick-sand promises
For your empty love
For all the tears
And all the lies
For making me want to die

If you’re reading this,
I want my fucking book back.

Love Forever,
Your fool

This was written for a music prompt contest started on Booksie. The song quote I based this off of is from the song Forget You- "I pity the fool that falls in love with you."
Oh man, do I want that book back. It's one of my favorite novels ever.
